The most common thread type used by fire departments today is NST or National Standard Thread, also referred to as NH or National Hose, and sometimes even NHT or National Hose Thread. However, NST or NH is the more prevalent terminology these days. NH and NST are the same standard.

In contrast, NPSH or National Pipe Straight Hose has the same threads per inch (TPI) as National Pipe Tapered (NPT), but the thread does not taper. NPSH is a straight thread and seals by a gasket in the female coupling, which allows for a swivel, similar to NH / NST, making both ideal for hose couplings. However, a male NPSH coupling will not thread into a female metal or PVC pipe, as NPSH is incompatible with NPT.

NPT or National Pipe Tapered is commonly used in plumbing and some industrial applications. PVC pipe and schedule 40 pipe are typically threaded using the NPT standard. As the name suggests, this is a tapered thread, where the outside diameter of the male (ODM) gets smaller towards the end of the fitting, and the inside diameter of the female narrows with depth. As the two fittings are threaded together, the opposite tapers create thread friction and make the seal without the use of a gasket.

Importantly, a 1.5" NST /NH fire nozzle will only connect to a 1.5" NST / NH hose, not NPSH / NPT hose. The nozzle has a red polycarbonate body with a rubber bumper and a brass stem, and it is a thermoplastic constant flow fog nozzle that provides a consistent volume at any spray angle. The approximate gallons per minute (GPM) for this nozzle is 75.

In summary, the key distinctions are: - NST/NH is the most common fire department thread type, while NPSH has the same TPI as NPT but is a straight thread - NPT is a tapered thread used in plumbing and industrial applications, creating a seal without a gasket - A 1.5" NST/NH fire nozzle will only connect to a 1.5" NST/NH hose, not NPSH/NPT
